dienaziscum: Bucky in profile from Cap3 poster (Default)
Stealing this from potofsoup because I realize it's probably a good idea to put up an intro of sorts beyond what one can dig up in my profile.

  • Name: Jess
  • Age: late 30s
  • Pronouns: she/her
  • Role: I read LOADS of fic and try to leave thoughtful comments as often as I can; occasionally, I'll write up some meta and, once in a blue moon, I'll post a little ficlet of my own. I also write w/ partners over email; I've currently got four active RPs of this type going.
  • Current fandom: Marvel MCU, very small corners of Marvel 616; within MCU, I'm primarily active in the Cap portion of fandom
    • Favorite characters:
      • Bucky, because for all that's been done to him, and all the horrors that he's commited himself, he still finds his way back to his own humanity, and remains a selfless, loyal, resilient protector despite everything. His story is such a compelling exploration of humanity and dehumanziation, agency and responsibility, identity, personality, strength, loss, love, redemption, and determination, just to name a few of the elements that tug at me most deeply.
      • Steve, because he is so deeply committed to goodness, whether it is "correct" or not, and remains true to himself and those he loves even when it costs him damn near everything, and because he tries so hard not just to see but to inspire and make manifest the good in people, rather than the tendency toward the bad; his character epitomizes refusal to let one's physical limitations dampen one's spirit, and later, a refusal to let one's physical capabilities/prowess define who he is or what his priorities are.
      • Tony, because there's a lot in his story regarding familial disinterest (to put it very lightly) and expectations and addiction and a very trippy combination of superiority and self-hatred; also, stuff about masks and failures to relate on interpersonal levels, all of which hits very close to home for me. Tony is unlikable in many ways, but is staggeringly intelligent and creative/innovative, and he's motivated to use these gifts toward what he sees as the greater good, even when the path towardthat greater good is ugly and difficult and garners hatred.
      • Sam, who is a best-case scenario for a combat veteran's journey back home to himself after being downrange; he is a helper as much as Bucky is a protector, and he is staggeringly courageous and loyal and a fantastic judge of character, a realist when others might be too optimistic/pessimistic, a grounding and motivating force, and the sort of person who lifts up others by example (also, I love his humor in the face of impossible shit).
      • I also really enjoy Natasha, Maria Hill, Vasily Karpov, Alexander Pierce, Nick Fury, Howard Stark, Peggy Carter, and Arnim Zola as well-faceted characters, but I won't write long screeds about them here.
    • Ships: Hoo lord, more like armada: Bucky/Steve, Bucky/Sam, Bucky/Nat, any OT3+ thereof; Sam/Steve; Nat/Steve; Sam/Nat; Maria/Nat; Peggy/Steve; Tony/Rhodey; occasionally, Bucky/Tony; and in obviously not-romantic ways, Bucky/Karpov, Bucky/Pierce, Bucky/HYDRA goons; in 616verse, I mostly ship Steve/Tony and Bucky/Nat and, less kindly, Tony/Tiberius Stone.
  • Fandom history
    • First-ever introduction to fandom: I was doing fandom before I ever knew fandom was a thing: I would wrangle all the older kids who went to this neighborhood lady's house after school into LARPing Lord of the Rings scenarios. Then, in 1994, Interview With the Vampire happened in movie theatres, and I fell into a black hole of novels and fiction and online fan communities from which I didn't emerge until 1999, roughly. Then I was dormant until around 2005, when I got back into VC fandom during the bulletin board RPG/Livejournal heyday, and was active until 2012, after which point Marvel stole me away.
    • Other fandoms I've lurked in: I'm not really a lurker, but more of a serial monogamist when it comes to fandoms. I will occasionally read SPN and Sherlock fic, though I've only seen S1 of the former and none of the latter.
    • How I got into my current fandom: One day in June 2012, a VC friend posted a short fic about Tony and DUM-E; I proceeded to read basically every Tony fic I could find on AO3, then every Steve/Tony fic (largely 616-based at that time), until finally I saw Avengers four full months after it'd been released in theaters. The rest is history; I was into MCU fandom hook, line, and sinker from that moment onward.
  • Other fandom platforms:
    • AO3: DirectorShellhead (gosh do I everwish AO3 made changing a username easy)
    • Tumblr: dienaziscum, where I made a masterpost about myself (also included in my Dreamwidth profile)
    • Instagram: @glitter_and_salt, which only very occasionally focused on fannish stuff; I'm a makeup artist, makeuppy content is the majority of what I post over there
    • Discord: dienaziscum (Jess)#6111
    • Email: semistable100yrold@gmail.com
  • Real life stuff:
    • Professional: I'm the director of a publications project focused on the prevention and treatment of addiction and mental illness; I got into that position through previous roles as editor, managing editor, media director, etc. I'm also a freelance makeup artist.
    • Non-fandom activities/hobbies: I have two daughters who are fantastically different little people that hold my whole heart; one is a gymnast, and the other is a jiu jitsu competitor, so that takes up a lot of our family time just going to practices, meets, etc. I enjoy writing w/ partners over email, cooking, playing piano, and writing endless lists of things I want/need to do but that I will never actually do, which means, essentially, that I am a fantastic and accomplished procrastinator.
    • I care deeply about: the environment, LGBTQ issues (I am bisexual), intersectional feminism, mental health, addiction & recovery (I've been in rec for 10+ years), good parenting, services for veterans (my spouse is a Marine Corps combat veteran), jettisoning Trump and his entire cohort into the sun, and rectifying political woes
